Magazines are good. Better than books in many ways. Non-linear, minimal attention span required. And you can leave them behind when you get to your destination.
And what DOES one take on a long plane ride these days to keep kids happy? I know (and saw demonstrated again on a recent flight with three kids right behind me, two right in front) that this must be a challenge...

Hi run-a-way girlfriend. I love attention too, so I will keep training to make sure I can run faster then you.
Yay on the running!
For me, a travel essential is a car magazine. I like books too, but it's nice to have something to look at that does not require linear attention.
And then there's the whole keep-the-kids-happy thing for us parents. Thankfully that's easier now than it used to be.

Congratulations! I'm so proud of you - you'll be out-running me pretty soon. :)
