He had a wife! I can't read anything about her and even in his letters, he mentions only loneliness. Never did he mention his wife in the letters to his father, not even once. This actually just made me a bit less of a fan then I was yesterday. What hardship she must have endured. I wonder who she was and what she thought. My reading habits changed drastically with the end of grad school (burnt out), then again when I got married. My husband reads a lot for work and has very little interest in reading when not working. His go-to is watching TV or playing a video game on his phone. I've never had a TV in my bedroom until we got married, and I can't say I'm a fan - I definitely find it easier to watch another episdode of "Friends" than to pick up a book or a kindle (what a bad habit!). After realizing how much I missed reading, we made a deal, and pretty much anytime I say I want to read, he will either turn off the TV or plug in headphones.
I, too, love checking out ebooks from my library. I'm lucky enough to qualify for 3 library cards, so I have more options for finding the ebooks I want, but there are plenty not available as ebooks, or with months-long waits.Diannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11589040362643829954noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36770289.post-88313617025470942902019-05-15T12:07:37.110-06:002019-05-15T12:07:37.110-06:00Keep it going. Some of my peers break friendships off for the use of the word "Retarded" (not connected to their children, usually as a generic adjective)... but the decision I have made is that it is not directed at me or mine, and shaming them does not further the elimination of the word.

Regarding correcting theology, I use what you taught me in ethnographic interviewing. Listen 90%, speak 10% with an unknown person... And now you know certain things about this man. And maybe you can indirectly share a truth that will correct this false teaching at another interaction, without "treating the symptom" of wrong theology. You could intentionally share a truth that brings you comfort, without telling him it contradicts his statement.shantjoy2https://www.blogger.com/profile/00498251710285068170noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36770289.post-56200361647869977082016-04-05T08:21:16.877-06:002016-04-05T08:21:16.877-06:00Yes! You definitely have the skills to complete the PhD and I hope you will consider our new program..."

Did some math yesterday on this. If I did their ICS PhD it would be 48 credit hours, completed over three years or five, and cost around $20,000 (money I don't have of course, and if you could the opportunity cost, probably not feasible at this point). However, my 45-credit MA plus a 48-credit PhD would probably still be a little under the time Hubs had to put in to get his 90-some credit MDiv. Good bit cheaper, too. I was trying to find the recyle bin in our office and when asked they said, "Our building doesn't recycle." I was horrified. I called the building property managers immediately and asked how we get recycling for the building. They said I would need to have a petition signed by every office in the building. Over my lunch hours I would go around getting signatures. I usually would make a comment that I was from Oregon, need I say more. They would laugh and sign the petition. A little while later we had recycling in our building and they delivered bins to every office. I was a happy camper.
